Your school has a 5x60 Officer who will organise and arrange various activities for you all to take part in, in line with the Welsh Assembly target of 90% of pupil’s taking part in regular and frequent physical activity by 2020.

The 5x60 programme aims to give you the opportunity to participate in out of school activities. Activities that you can take part in could range from football and netball to dodge-ball or surfing.

During 2007, the 5x60 programme grew to involve the pupils of Maesteg and Brynteg, with the existing schools of Cynffig, Pencoed, Ynysawdre and Bryntition taking part in inter-school festivals.

With all schools sending squads, the festivals have allowed you to take part against friends from other schools in the area. In November there were two festivals, involving girls football, boys basketball, boys football and girls basketball.

Along with the inter-school festivals, the Active Young People Department held a ‘5x60 Games’ at Bridgend Recreation Centre and Newbridge Fields on 5th July. You can all look forward to participating in this years event. Ask you 5x60 Officer for more details of the event or how you can enter.

With dance and cheerleading being successful activities within the ‘5x60’ programme, the Active Young People Department organised a dance event to showcase all that had been learned over the period of time that the activities had been running. The event was held at Porthcawl Pavilion, and was supported by the Arts & Culture Department of Bridgend CBC and Bridgend Youth Theatre were involved.

After the success of last years event, the Active Young People Department organised a ‘Dance Extravagana’ held again at Porthcawl Pavilion on January 17th.

In addition to squads from all participating schools, acts invited displays included Jukebox (British Hip Hop Champions, 2007), Llynfi Dance Academy (Welsh Street Dance Champions, 2007), India Dance Wales, Amy John & Lizzy Mahon and a performance from two pupils Charlie Vaughan & Emily Perry. All squads that entered the extravaganza performed extremely well and should be proud of all the effort that was put in, looking forward to the next event.
