Construction work has begun on a new state-of–the-art swimming pool in Ynysawdre with internationally renowned contractors Willmott Dixon Turner at the helm.
The impressive new building is designed by acclaimed architects Limbrick Ltd and will feature an ultra-modern 25 metre deck level swimming pool, a12.5m x 7.5m warm water teaching pool, a 45 station fitness studio and a spacious multi purpose dance and aerobics studio. The new development will also incorporate a changing village for all pool users with separate same floor changing rooms for users of the fitness studio or multi –purpose studio, lift access & automatic doors and a new meeting / training room.
Several grants have been secured to help build the new pool including a £500,000 Big Lottery Fund grant, a £750,000 Sports Council award and a £30,000 donation by the County’s swim squad. The remainder of the cost will be met by Bridgend County Borough Council.
Councillor Peter Foley, Cabinet member responsible for Education and Leisure said: “I am delighted that construction has begun on this exciting project which, when complete, will be of enormous benefit to the whole County Borough”.
“As well as improving the general health of the community, the new pool will allow beginners to learn to swim, recreational swimmers to increase participation and more serious athletes to aspire to national levels and beyond”.
The new swimming pool is due to open early 2008.
